How do I know if the timing belt was changed on my 2002 Acura mdx?

Pretty straight forward question. I want to know if there is a way to tell if the timing belt was changed on the car without a paper record of service. Anyone know?|||At this age you can get a hint from the condition of the markings on the back of the belt. Remove or loosen the upper timing belt cover so you can see the belt and bump it through until the markings come into view. If the markings are clear and white it was changed sometime, but if the markings are worn it is probably the original. If in doubt, you can't afford to take the chance and will have to change it.|||Call it preventative maintenance. Have it changed. Even if it has been changed before, you don't know when. If you notice some wear, are you willing to take the timing belt cover off againa and again to find out how long you have left? Just spend the money. At least you'll know when it's been changed. That's one item I would not doubt a mechanic on. Honda/Acuras and bad timing belts are a bad combination. If you're in the market to buy an '02 MDX, you should also be equally concerned with the transmission as well. they had transmission issues on all V6 Honda products during those years and the MDX was not included in the Technical Sevice Bulletin eventhough it too has the same troublesome H5 transmission. Therefore, if the tranny fails, it's out of your pocket. Not cheap to replace plus this is an allwheel drive vehicle- making it cost even more.|||'02 likely hasn't been changed.

no way to tell for sure. evidence of tool marks on fasteners would be a clue. but not definitive.

noting if it's an oem belt or an aftermarket one would be your only evidence.
